The Burden Lake Country Club is located in Averill Park, a village within the Town of Sand Lake. Wild events have been known to take place there. William Joseph Kennedy, American author of Ironweed resides in Averill Park and often uses the local history and locales for his novels.
The Town of Sand Lake is about 12 miles east of Albany and was formed in 1812 from portions of the towns of Greenbush and Berlin. Later in 1848, the northern portion of Sand Lake was transformed into the Town of Poestenkill. Present day Sand Lake includes the villages, hamlets and communities of Averill Park, Crystal Lake, Glass Lake, Maple Grove, Sand Lake, Sliters, Taborton, and West Sand Lake.
